Building a Strong Foundation for High School, College, and Career
Project Lead The Way Gateway engages students in activities that not only build knowledge and skills in areas including computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, but also empower students to develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance.
Students trace the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics as they learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Students use the VEX Robotics® platform to design, build, and program real-world objects such as traffic lights, toll booths, and robotic arms.

Fairmont’s VEX Competition Elective
Leverages the “coolness” of robotics, and the excitement of head to head competition to inspire and engage students. Students will walk through the design and build a mobile robot to play a sport-like game. During this process they will learn key STEM principles, and robotics concepts. At the culmination of this class, they will compete head-to-head against their peers in the classroom, or on the world stage in the VEX Robotics Competition, the largest and fastest growing international robotics competition for middle and high school students.
This modular and project-based curriculum teaches the design process in an engaging, hands-on manner to help teachers challenge, motivate, and inspire their students. By moving students through an actual engineering project, students quickly understand the relevance of what they are learning.
Students will start off learning about engineering and engineering problem solving. They will be given introductions to VEX EDR robots and Autodesk® Inventor®. In Unit 5 students will be presented with an engineering challenge; they will need to build a robot to play a sport-like game. After this, the rest of the curriculum walks students through the design of their robot while presenting them with relevant STEM and Robotics principles. At the end of the course, students compete head-to-head with their robots.
